William O’Keeffe Prize & Lecture

Dr. William O’Keeffe

Dr. William O’Keeffe was a native of Waterford whose family were involved in the stone masonary business (monuments) in Waterford for many years. This family business remains in operation to this day. William O’Keeffe was born in February 1914 and was a graduate of RCSI Medical School. Following qualification, he returned to Waterford in 1940 and established a General Practice in Parnell St. Waterford. He was also appointed onto the Staff of the County and City Infirmary in Waterford. In addition, he was involved in Waterford Maternity and Lying-in Hospital founded in 1834 and did all his maternity practice there. He was involved in Medical, Surgical and Obstetric Practise and worked until Waterford County and City Infirmary closed in 1987.  He was a founder member of Order of Malta and a Knight of Malta. He married Eileen in 1962 and had 5 children. Dr. William O’Keeffe died in 1992 on Christmas Day.

He is considered as a Surgeon in his day who typically practiced in medicine and maternity in addition to surgery, as opposed to surgeons of Mr. Gordon Watson’s (Founding Member of WSOM) era who performed general surgery in its widest dimensions, as opposed to surgeons nowadays who are very super specialized indicating 3 generations of surgery within living memory practiced in the City of Waterford.
